Math Activities and Games You Have to Try in March

March is one of my absolute favorite months in my classroom because it is my birthday month and there are so many fun holidays to celebrate! From Women’s History Month, International Women’s Day, PI Day, March Madness, and St. Patrick’s Day, so fun! To make the most of the month, try some fun activities that will spark your students’ creativity while teaching them something new. From coloring pages to math puzzles, this guide has plenty of March activities to keep your class engaged and entertained. This post includes affiliate links!

March 8th – International Women’s Day

March is also National Women’s History Month, and it’s the perfect time to educate students about the strong women who have changed history, especially STEM. Introduce your students to prominent female figures from around the world and discuss their accomplishments. For a fun twist, have your students color some women’s month pennants!

March 14th – PI Day

PI day is a great opportunity to introduce kids to the fascinating world of math! You can get creative by making Pi Day Bracelets and wearing a stylish PI Day Shirt.
Do some area and circumference math and give out PI tattoos, stickers, and/or Little Debbie pies (fudge rounds and oatmeal cream pies) when students finish!

Bonus Ideas:

    • Make a Pi City in the Sky using the numbers of pi and graph paper!!
    • Make a skyline using the numbers of pi and Google Sheets

Mid-March – March Madness

One of the best ways to celebrate sports and have some extra fun in your classroom is by incorporating a March Madness Champions Bracket Challenge. This activity is great not only for basketball fans but also for those who enjoy friendly competition. My favorite way to incorporate March Madness in my classroom is with March Mathness!

March Mathness consists of reviewing math, basketball, and competition among students. Make sure you have some prizes planned! You may also want to only allow kids with NO missing work to join.

  • How to Play (Individually): This idea is from the 8th Grade Math Teacher! Two students sit an equal distance from a basketball hoop (I have a basketball trashcan but you can get an actual hoop that goes over the door!). Each student will have a dry-erase board + marker, eraser, and small basketball. Each student should also have a friend nearby who will go grab the ball if they miss! Display a question for each student to answer. They write their answer on the board and then show it to you, if correct, they start shooting. If incorrect, they keep trying. Both students should keep working towards the correct answer even if their opponent has already gotten it right! The first student to successfully make a basket wins! Read the full blog post here.

  • How to Play (Groups): Essentially the same process as playing individually except students are in groups (so there’s a team name on the bracket) and they answer a set of questions! Each group selects a shooter! Each round takes about 10 minutes at the end of class. (We have a total of 7 rounds for each class.) So this can take a few weeks!

You can use this March Mathness Bracket and Bulletin Board.

I have two LOW PREP March Mathness Reviews that you can try:

I also plan to play this Basketball-themed version of my Ghosts in The Graveyard Review Game (pictured above). We will be reviewing equations and inequalities with this!

March 17th – St. Patrick’s Day

In the days leading up to St. Patrick’s Day, students will be doing some math along with some coloring with this Color By Number Template. If you teach Systems of Equations, you may also be interested in this self-checking activity!

St. Patrick’s Day is also my birthday so I love going all out! I wear a St. Patrick’s Day Shirt paired with Festive Earrings!

Before class, I hide shamrocks around the classroom, and the students who find them win a small prize like these lucky charms cereal bars! (You could take it a step further and have math questions on them!)

We also play the St. Patrick’s Day Version of the Ghosts in The Graveyard review game!
