How to Play Ghosts in the Graveyard: The Game Your Students Will Beg For!
Find out how to play Ghosts in the Graveyard today! This game is an easy-to-learn, action-packed review game that’s sure to entertain your students. It’s the perfect way to reinforce important topics through friendly competition and teamwork.
Get Ready to Play Ghosts In The Graveyard
- Use a study guide to create challenges. Each challenge should have 2-3 questions. Make copies of your challenges (I do a class set)
- Divide students into groups of 3-5 and give them an assigned number and a Team Captain.
- Make enough copies of the recording sheet for each student.
How To Play Ghosts in the Graveyard
- Each group will receive the first challenge.
- They will work together to problem-solve and write their answers in the designated spot on their recording sheets.
- When done, the team captain will be in charge of bringing the challenges to get checked!
During the Game:
- After students complete a challenge, the Team Captain will bring their answers to you to be checked.
- If all answers are correct, the group can choose a tombstone to move their ghost to.
- Each tombstone is worth a different UNKNOWN point value. This is what makes the game so fun! The group can then move on to the next challenge.
- If any answers are incorrect, the Team Captain returns to their group and they try to fix their mistake(s)!
At the end of class, the point values of the tombstones are revealed and the group with the highest score wins!
Tips for playing the Ghosts in The Graveyard:
- Encourage friendly competition among the groups but also remind them to work together and everyone needs to show their work (if math class).
- Have your answer key in a file folder so they can’t see the answers as you check each challenge!
- Use a marker to write checkmarks on each challenge.
- Provide a variety of challenges to keep the game exciting and cater to different learning styles. My challenges typically increase in difficulty as they play!
- Throw in a negative point value!
- Make sure students understand the game is NOT about speed, it’s based on luck.

Hello! I see that your tombstones are on the screen/projector? How/what app did you use to create this, so you have moveable tombstones? I think even the juniors and seniors I teach would play this game. Thanks for your ideas and help!
Hi Teresa! I agree, I think they would love it. I used Google Slides. 🙂
